Worktop Templating

Templating for quartz and granite worktops is a critical step in ensuring a flawless installation. This process involves creating an accurate template that serves as the blueprint for cutting the stone to the precise dimensions required for your space.

Accurate templating is paramount due to the unique characteristics of each slab of stone. Variations in colour, pattern, and texture can impact the final appearance of the worktop. A well-executed template not only enhances aesthetic appeal but also ensures functionality, making certain that the fit aligns perfectly with cabinetry and appliances.

The Templating Process

  1. Site Measurement: A professional templater will visit your site to take comprehensive measurements. This includes recording the dimensions of the existing structures and noting any specific features, such as sinks, cooktops, or unique angles.

  2. Template Creation: Using a physical template made from Cortex, the templater will create an accurate representation of the required worktop shape.

  3. Review and Approval: Once the template is created, it will be presented for review. This step is crucial, as it allows for any adjustments or corrections before the actual cutting begins.

  4. Finalisation: After approval, the template will be used to guide the cutting process in the workshop. Each detail will be taken into consideration, including the placement of any cutouts for sinks or hobs, ensuring that every aspect is meticulously planned.

Cutting and Shaping

Modern stone cutting machines, such as waterjet cutters and bridge saws, utilise advanced technologies to slice through materials effortlessly. Waterjet cutters employ a high-pressure jet of water mixed with abrasive materials, allowing for intricate designs and delicate shapes without compromising the stone's integrity. This method is particularly advantageous for intricate patterns or sensitive materials that require a gentle touch.

Bridge saws, equipped with diamond blades, provide the strength necessary for thicker slabs while allowing for bevelled edges and precise angles. These powerful machines offer operators the ability to programme cuts with exact dimensions, minimising waste and maximising yield.

The integration of CNC (Computer Numerical Control) technology in cutting processes represents a significant advancement in the industry. CNC machines can execute complex designs with exceptional repeatability, enabling designers to explore innovative shapes and styles that were previously unattainable.

Once the pieces are cut, shaping involves creating profiles that enhance the aesthetic appeal. Various edge treatments such as bevel, bullnose, or ogee, can provide a bespoke touch, allowing the worktop to blend beautifully with cabinetry and furnishings.

Throughout the cutting process, safety and efficiency are paramount. Operators are be well-trained in both the machinery and stone handling techniques to prevent accidents and ensure a seamless workflow.

The Importance of Seam Setters

As standard, we use seam setters to perfect your worktop joints. But what exactly is a seam setter?

A seam setter is an important tool used by professional stone installers. Its key function is to keep edges clean, chip-free, and perfectly straight.

Why we use seam setters for all joints as standard:

  1. Preparing Edges: The seam setter keeps the edges of the stone clean and free of chips.

  2. Joining and Levelling: The seam setter ensures that the two pieces of the worktop are aligned and level.

  3. Securing the Joint: Once the edges are precisely aligned, we pack and glue the two pieces together, resulting in a tight finish.
